About Dioramas
Since 2006, I've been working on a series of images titled, Imaginary Dioramas. Work in this series is created through the combination of two or more photographic images. Incorporating wax figures, mannequins, or roadside statues, into a separately photographed background environment creates the imagined realities portrayed in this work.
As a collector of photographic information from my environment and travels, I am attracted to a wide range of subjects. Since I seldom know how my images will be incorporated into one of my dioramas, I photograph subjects of interest from numerous perspectives. In my studio, I spend much time studying my photographic imagery, and it is through this process that I'm able to identify image relationships. At times the background image becomes the catalyst for the form and content of my images, while other times the figure or statue becomes the catalyst.
Some of my dioramas make viewers smile while others may be more confrontational, surreal or abstract. My goal is to create (or stage) a convincing photographic composite with enough information to allow the viewer to interpret for him or herself the content or meaning of the completed image.
